Cosa nostra pizza is coming

L'acquisto per 2.6 milioni di dollari del dominio pizza.com dimostra una cosa sola: Snow Crash, il romanzo di Neal Stephenson è lavoro di vero profeta.

Per chi non l'avesse letto, Snow Crash è un romanzo culto del genere cyberpunk che ha ispirato i linden labs nella creazione di Second Life. E' infatti nel libro che si parla di un "metaverso" messo a disposizione degli utenti che si creano da soli case, mezzi di trasposto e tutto il resto.

Ma all'inizio del libro (primo capitolo qui) troviamo un altro indizio profetico: Hiro, il protagonista (ricorda qualcosa?), che scorrazza su una macchina futuristica per la california armato di spade samurai, consegnando importantissime pizze per la Cosa Nostra Pizza. Le pizze devono arrivare entro 30 minuti, altrimenti il cliente ha diritto ad una nuova pizza, e riceve una visita da Uncle Enzo in persona: lui finisce per dovere un favore alla mafia, e il fattorino finisce in qualche pilastro di cemento.

Ora, chi se non Uncle Enzo in persona pagherebbe 2.6 milioni di dollari per pizza.com?

Ok, i don't want to be blasphemous or anything, but today i had to try to learn how to build stuff and how to make clothes in second life, and well, this is what i came up with.

The robe is actually a skirt and a shirt, and the cross well, that's just primitives.

EDIT: After sitting there for a while, other avatars gathered around me, one fed me with a chocolate chip cookie (i was hungry and you fed me), they offered me beer and some strange drink i refused, they followed me around.. Evidently Jesus still has it! :)

Second try on second life

As part of my job, i need to become a Second Life expert in a week or so.

So this morning, while being stuck at home by a terrible and sudden back ache that stripped me of my will to live, I ventured again in the "metaverse".

In the ten times or so I've logged in to Second Life, my "avatar" went through many reincarnations: born as a female, it was later converted to male.

At first I wanted to dress like a guru of sorts, something like a jesus figure. Sandals weren't a problem, since it's what you get as a standard. Unfortunately I don't know how to make a jesus dress in second life (it's not easy and you need money apparently). So it ended up like a long haired dwarf, wearing a t-shirt made of the american flag (one of the few free textures available).

For today, i decided to make myself a shirt, the '90s nirvana kind! Red plaid!

Enough for the dressing part, I seem to start to see the point of this second life thing. The recent addition of voice chat is what makes it useful for me. In the end, we have been searching for live meeting software for years. Considering you can stream audio, video and build (somehow) your conference center, it really starts to make sense.

So there was screens everywhere with the slides, the speakers used their avatars to speak, and all the people around were listening. It was funny to see the "guy" next to me fall asleep just like in normal conferences (its status went from online to "away").

Then, someone was streaming what his characted saw over the internet, and that was recorded, and it will stay as meeting minutes. Of course, i had to fly and dance in front of the camera, just being stupid.

Secondlife - Laziness

There's this event today, called BarCampTurin which I am going to.

But, this morning i was too lazy to get up, so i tried to get there through Second life.

It is somehow wierd to watch that guy, that I know since he comes from my tiny village, through a 3d worldwide simulation program... And that thing in front of the screen is me, i ended up with some strange '70s jesus hairdo... :)

Ok, I have to move my lazy *ss!!
