Usare un iPod mini mentre si ricarica

Se avete ancora un ipod Mini, a meno che non l'abbiate sotterrato anni fa e tolto ora dalla sua bara, probabilmente la batteria è morta o morente.

Se non avete il suo alimentatore però, e come si sa Apple dopo un po' ha cominciato a risparmiare non includendolo nella confezione, il problema è che attaccandolo via USB lui entra nel suo trance da accoppiamento con iTunes.

Quindi, a meno di non usare iTunes, non è possibile ascoltare la musica mentre l'ipod è in carica.

Il trucco però c'è: inserire il cavo usb solo in parte, diciamo inserirlo per 3-4 millimetri. In questo modo lo spinotto fa contatto per ricaricare, ma non per i dati. Sarà convinto di essere attaccato all'alimentatore! :)

Drifting away from apple

I've been elaborating on this fow a while now.

Over the years, I have been a huge fan of many apple products, I own both a desktop and a laptop macintosh, an iPod, I also bought those wierd looking round speakers, that have a proprietary cable that works only with my powermac.

Over time, however, for work and hobby reasons I have got in contact with much opensource software: online applications, Linux of course, XboxMediaCenter...

This made me think again of my Apple addiction... It's true, it's really working well. Take my laptop for example: it has different settings for different network contexts (and that's a killer feature, if you ask me), the ipod works very well and the interface is good, setting up a wireless network is a snap...

But it's all proprietary... and so many things are like my speakers... even the upcoming iPhone won't accept third party software.
ITunes sucks compared to Amarok (at least, this is my taste) (you can connect your ipod to Amarok too). the Video you can play through a new ipod (not that I own that) has to be encoded in wierd formats, then there's the DRM questions, proprietary file formats...

So, Apple is cool, Linux is even cooler. This idea that people freely contribute to it, and change things as they like, just wins me over.

Of course, this comes still with some degree of trouble, but if you feel like trying you can get a lot of satisfaction! :D (nerd alert!)

making new needs

Now, if the trick of the art of selling is to create needs that people don't have before, Apple really know that they're doing.

Good thing I am completely broke in the moment... :)

Let's make it a greener Apple

Of course we all love Apple products (apart from that mightymouse).

But it looks like there's lots of poison in the Apple laptops and products they currently sell: more than average toxic waste is produced when you dump with pain and sorrow your dead iMac or iBook or iWhatever.

So the nice folks at greenpeace did some CSS stealing and set up a website - spoof (very well done) to sign a petition to ask our favourite hippie-CEO-millionaire to be a pioneer in greener computers too.

Please go out there and sign it!

Open Goodies for your mac

Ok, you got this mac. It's glossy and has round edges. It rocks. Now you need software.You heard of opensource software, but that's for geeks and you bought this computer because it was easy.

Actually, even if Mac Os has always been stictly proprietary software, mac os X is based on robust opensource roots: unix and freebsd.

But, enough of this. I've just found a really useful (and cool looking) website that lists the best Opensource applications for your mac. They are as easy to install as the others... Just drop them in the application folder.

There's Firefox, but also Camino, you'll find the great Adium and some less known application like the newsreader Vienna and the (s)ftp client Cyberduck... and many others.
