Why i don't like lomography or holga (because it's lame)

I had this wonderful and long post about why I think the whole Lomography thing, invented by two marketing students on a trip to prague is basically bullshit.

For those of you that healthily managed to avoid the unnecessary hype of the thing, it's basically a plastic camera, with one setting and a plastic lens that takes crappy pictures. VIgnetting, light streaks, wierd colors, blur... the stuff that would normally make you throw away a slide or delete a file. (and ditch your camera too). It sucks, really, but it's so cool and of course flickr is invaded with lots of Lomograph (that's how you call a picture done with it.)

Oh, it was a long and convincing post, that would have forced my friend Splunge to use a proper decent camera again, instead of traveling with this kind of horrid plastic monster (shame on you). And taking lots of (pleasant as they are) fuzzy, cross_over_mega processed double exposed pictures like he's doing lately...

But my funny browser crashed in the middle of it, so I had to find someone who shared my views, and I found it. A very good website by the way. Quote:

Apart from the social and economical backgrounds of LOMOgraphy as explained above, there is the artistic aspect. LOMOgraphs are pictures shot with the least possible brains. Preferably at night. Preferably from the hip. Preferably in such a fashion that you can't see what's on the picture. The intent of LOMOgraphy as a philosophy is to let go of all the burdens of traditional photography, and capture life as it is, as directly as possible. To translate freedom into pictures. To be free, wild, and young. To be spontaneous.

To then impress others with your spontaneity.

..

Another one of my problems with LOMOgraphy is that the form is fixed, with you to fill in the blanks. There is very little room to experiment, because a LOMOgraph is a LOMOgraph only if it conforms to some basic rules. It needs to be unsharp. It needs to be abstractish. It needs to have strong colors. It needs to conform to some notion of artistic credibility. So in the end, how enlightened is LOMOgraphy really?

Eat it Splunge! GET A PROPER CAMERA! (so we can discuss apertures and focal length and formats and all sorts of VERY USEFUL stuff again!) Stop this plastic crazyness! :D

dear Sir,
Your concerns about so called Lomography depend only on your deep and mysterious urge to comply to the misanthropic bearish image of yourself you've carefully built in these years; you tried to argue with someone about CMSs but it didn't turn out well, so, knowing I'm a born polemist, you're teasing me now...
;)

by the way: Your idea (or the other guy's) about Lomography aren't necessarily those of people using crap plastic cameras... I'm not using Holga because of that teenage emo bullshit you seem to believe everyone using less than 1000$ gear should be believing in
I believe HOLGA is an instrument and a technique, not a way to bee free but the exact opposite, a way to try to make pictures within certain fixed esthetic rules and limits, wich of course happen to be the ones I like. I know there's a lot of people driven by the lomo hype, but I don't see why you should bother about them, their pictures, their cameras or whathever, as well as I don't see why you think I'm in that bunch...
There's not only ONE photo techinque, so if I like film and using different films to get different effects, even though I know I could get similar results with hours of photoshop, that doesn't mean I'm waiting for the magic of casuality...
I don't like the intensive use of photoshop, but I'm not starting some luddist crusade against digital imaging...
I like all kind of photos, and those I don't like I ignore. I think you should do the same ok?
;)

no! I can't ignore them! yesterday a guy rang my bell he wanted to push some 120 film roll in my throat! The day before yesterday I was attacked by some teenage boys with plastic cameras and they blinded me with their wierd red light flashes! this lomography is everywhere!!

Hi Mario!

This post has had me laughing out loud! Everyone loves a gimmick, so it's refreshing to see a view that cuts through the hype.

Thanks,
