[Shameless] Xbox media center addiction!
that's jeremy clarkson from topgear, the biggest a--hole in the world! but one of the funniest ones.
Ok, I bought this xbox on ebay, almost got tricked (ok I got tricked by the guy, he will die hopefully soon). I did it because i felt the need, I must admit, for another useless toy...
But, it turned out to be not so useless... now it changed into a dvdplayer, divx player, mp3 player, network browser, food mixer, a gaming console, a lighter,a linux pc, a web server, ftp server and a can opener, thanks to this program: Xbox Media Center.
Warning: nerd details ahead!
Basically here's whay i did:
- get an original game (5euro at the second hand gaming store);
- build a cable out of an usb extension and a controller cable
- format the ipod shuffle as xbox filesystem (he does it)
- load some kind of linux installer as a savegame using the ipod as usb stick
- format the hd and install this xboxmediacenter
- connect it to the home network, using the mac as a wireless bridge
- read the home network shared disks
- enjoy Top Gear and Lost! :D
(mm of course, since my tv is 14'' and the biggest monitor at home is 19'', this does not make that much sense... ) But it works so well! :D
And after all, can your vcr or divx player run linux? For 80 euros, it was a real bargain. (anyway, I'm on a foolish-tech-toy diet for a while).

[...] Certo a gentile richiesta, e certo per non sfigurare di fronte alle follie di linuxamenti vari mio amico freak (non ti offendere ma in questo caso te lo meriti… non è che stai leggendo il sito come feed rss su un xbox modificato, vero? ), ma soprattutto perchè sono in momentaneo posssesso di un iPod video, mi sono interessato del modo di passare i video di YouTube su HD, e di lì sull’iPod o sulla PSP, o su qualunqe cosa che abbia lo schermo abbastanza piccolo da non farvi capire che hanno una qualitàpessima… Fondamentalmente il problema è che alla fine sono videini in flash, il nemico della libertàonline e del 56k, ma non c’è da preoccuparsi, salvarseli è proprio una cazzata… ecco come fare su Mac, per i possessori di pc rimando a lifehacker, ma è più o meno lo stesso… [...]
Quite agree with you about clarkson but no link on how to format the ipod shuffle as xbox filesystem! Thats just poor show young man, now i'm forced to make the effort to google it. (poor poor me)
XBMC is the dogs bolloxs and just think, in a year or so you'll be able to pick up a second hand xbox for 20 euros (the ps1 goes for less) and it will still rock then

you don't need any link: just plug the ipod to one end of the homemade cable, and plug the other into the xbox. now when you select the "memory" option in the menu of the microsoft dashboard, it will format it without even asking. (really microsoft-style, by the way!)
