Street art - a strike of genius

November 6th, 2006

no, not by me, since I’m spending nights reading some “the history of media from the stone age” books (how many did I already had to suffer?? argh), but by some guys with more will and wit.

http://little-people.blogspot.com/

These are small scenes (really tiny) placed on the streets using small figurines. That’s SWEEEEET

(If only I had a macro lens, and some old plastic mini-men… WAIT! I’VE GOT THEM!)

This is some more crazy guy going through the sewers (in a boat , no less!!) to cement small hand made statues in mysterious places… Illegal, I think, but just so cool!!

Wikipedia ramblings, accents and the dukes of hazzard

November 4th, 2006

As always, when an exam comes close, I find myself enjoying everything else but studying. Studying is utterly boring, so I started a very long session of wikipedia rambling: you start with a term, you end up who knows where.

So the findings of tonight, started to know something about the differences between northern and southern USA states, ended up with:

- The Dukes of Hazzard (known as “Bo e Luke” around here), with details on seasons, cars used and pictures of fan meetings, the making of homebrew liquor. And finally a page that shows how to build your own “General Lee” car. (including the sound of the 12 tune horn). I also understood why they used no guns in the show! Bo and Luke were on parole, so they could not have access to guns. I guess Dynamite loaded arrows are more legal there… So senseful.

- Trying to understand how the accents change in the us, I found a real gem: the Speech accent archive. Probably it’s not the first time something like this has been done, but this is really extensive and web based. People from all over the world are asked to read the same phrase in english. Age, sex, provenience, type of education are gathered too… It’s really something.
Check out one of the italian speaking people (curiously labeled “Sicilian”)!

Unfortunately, the finnish male example has nearly no accent. A pity, I thought i could hear Yukka again! (famous tourist guide, nevermind…).

Also, since the german samples are from people too good at english, I failed to recreate the “Nihilistic accent” from the Big Lebowski!

new and old at www.vermario.com!

November 4th, 2006

Hi, while I’m considering a complete website restyling, I found the old link to my previous website.
It was 2003 then, and the “I have a website all done in flash” was big then! :)

so have a look! http://www.vermario.com/index_old.html

It seems I have to dust off my flash skills, to teach some teachers in a local high school… ehm…

The new website will have to consider some aggregation to my web hostees (Splunge and Theodor), some tagging and mapping and flickering goodness, and a wiki section where to put potentially useful stuff.

Future will tell! For now I’m stuck with the ultra exciting exam next week about the history of journalism, yeah, it will knock me out! WHOOOO

Under Pressure

October 17th, 2006

It’s a strange kind of period, when you have to search for Lyrics from the queen to complete a weblog post:

Pressure pushing down on me
Pressing down on you no man ask for
Under pressure - that burns a building
down

In short, I have too many worries and things to do in the moment. This blog will sit empty for a while. Later!

Picture: Mafia Marriage

Wierd mafia marriage

Originally uploaded by Vermario.

We went inside this museum in budapest… it was rented for the wedding of a local mafia man, we think…

At the door there were armed men, then huge gorillas (they looked like overweight retired russian boxers)… some 20 waiters were employed and a band playing some mandolin music…

Let’s make it a greener Apple

September 28th, 2006

Of course we all love Apple products (apart from that mightymouse).

But it looks like there’s lots of poison in the Apple laptops and products they currently sell: more than average toxic waste is produced when you dump with pain and sorrow your dead iMac or iBook or iWhatever.

So the nice folks at greenpeace did some CSS stealing and set up a website - spoof (very well done) to sign a petition to ask our favourite hippie-CEO-millionaire to be a pioneer in greener computers too.

Please go out there and sign it!

Jesus action figures!

September 3rd, 2006

lfjesus.jpg

Everyone has a different take on Jesus. Muslims saw him as a prophet. Buddhists say he was enlightened. Hindus consider him an avatar (the incarnation of a deity in human form), while Christians hail him as the Son of God. But, wherever your theological compass points, you will agree that this is the coolest action figure ever made.

There’s a quite big market for this kind of things… For example, one could shop at the Jesus Christ Superstore, whose aim is to “put the fun back into fundamentalism, abd the laughter into sectarian slaughter”… Or, you can drop by at Jesus of the week 2006 and see all kind of jesuses, or even submit your own best Jesus Picture.

Or you can go wider with action figures from all the Old Testament.

The masterpiece however remains this video on google video….

Flickr Geotagging!

August 29th, 2006

Flickr just added an easy (and fun) system to add geographic information on the pictures you take. It works, and it’s really a great feature.

go see for yourselves: have a look at my map.

(note: i need to get out of europe, at least once!)
